Faisal Rashid, MP for Warrington South, recently visited Morrison’s in Stockton Heath as part of Usdaw’s annual Respect for Shopworkers Week. Faisal is backing Usdaw’s campaign for respect for shopworkers as part of the Freedom From Fear Campaign, which seeks to prevent violence, threats and abuse directed at retail staff.
Respect for Shopworkers Week is an annual event during which shopworkers talk to the public about the problems of violence, threats and abuse, asking customers to ‘keep their cool’. This year’s week was launched with concerning statistics revealing a big jump in incidents of violence, threats and abuse against shopworkers.
During the visit Faisal met members of staff from Morrison’s and local PCSOs and he pledged his support for greater protection for shopworkers and other public facing workers whilst they go about their jobs.
Faisal Rashid MP said:
“It was great to meet members of the Morrison’s team and local PCSOs during my visit to the Morrison’s store in Stockton Heath.
“I am proud to back Usdaw’s campaign to protect shopworkers from violence, threats and abuse. It is completely unacceptable that shopworkers are subjected to violence and abusive behaviour in the workplace.
“Worryingly, data collected by the British Retail Consortium shows that the human cost of retail crime is growing, with a 40% increase in offences involving abuse or violence against shopworkers. Urgent action is needed to tackle the minority of shoppers who believe that it is acceptable to abuse retail staff.
“We must send out a clear message – assaulting shopworkers who are serving the public is completely unacceptable and it will not be tolerated. I will continue to campaign alongside Usdaw to ensure that shopworkers receive the help and support they need.”
